The San Diego-based National Conflict Resolution Center has received it’s largest gift ever — a $1 million pledge from Rancho Santa Fe philanthropist Dr. Jeanne Herberger.

The gift is part of a new endowment fundraising campaign with a goal of $20 million by the end of 2020 that comes amid mounting concern about heightened incivility and partisan divisiveness in America.

“I am very proud of NCRC’s exemplary record of fostering peaceful collaboration here at home and in a dozen countries across four continents,” said Herberger. “This hometown success story has made civility one of San Diego’s fastest-growing exports. We must seize this timely opportunity to broaden NCRC’s impact and raise its visibility.”

The center provides resources, training and expertise to help people, organizations and communities around the world manage and solve conflicts—with civility. It was founded in 1983 by the University of San Diego Law Center and the San Diego County Bar Association.

“Jeanne has helped chart NCRC’s organizational course, and her generous lead gift provides substantial momentum to our new endowment fund campaign,” said Steven Dinkin, the center’s president. “We are deeply grateful to Jeanne for her leadership and her faith in our mission, and we are tremendously excited about what lies ahead.”

Among the center’s projects are a partnership with regional law enforcement to keep at-risk youth in school, training student leaders at nine university campuses in California and Arizona in inclusive communication skills, empowerment training, and the Center for Community Cohesion model for neighborhood-based services.
